It has been reported recently that the TRNC President, Eroglu, has announced the probable visit by John Kerry to Cyprus in April this year.  The aim of the visit will be to press forward with the renewed negotiations between South and North Cyprus on the latest reunification plan.

Speaking recently, President Eroglu said: “We are in the warm-up phase and haven’t yet proceeded to the ‘give and take’ phase”... but we want to finalise these negotiations”.  He remarked that although the recent crisis in Crimea had taken the international spotlight off the Cyprus issue – that the UN and EU still saw Cyprus as second place on the international agenda.

Turkish North Cyprus voted “Yes” to the Annan Plan in 2004 and still take a positive attitude to rapid reunification he pointed out – although noting that it seemed that the Greek side were keener on a more drawn out process.

He repeated his view that a successful reunification would essentially boost the economies of both sides of the island and give the Greek Cypriots access to the massive population of the Turkish mainland.  President Eroglu is hopeful for a decision in 2015.
